Happy on being environed with a great ditch (part II)
This is the second of two posts documenting the Operation Watershed drainage work that has now been (almost) completed by Edburton Contractors in Clappers Lane. The discovery of a sewage leak meant that one aspect of the work could not be continued. These photographs were taken on 21st June. This is the first of two posts documenting the Operation Watershed drainage work currently being done by Edburton Contractors in Clappers Lane. These photographs were taken at the point where the public footpath emerges from Boggy Lagg and crosses the lane (i.e., immediately north of Knole House), over the period 13th–18th June. Operation Watershed on Clappers Lane [update]
The work to relieve the flooding in Clappers Lane is due to restart on Thursday 12th June.
Under Operation Watershed (WSCC programme to invest in flood and road repairs) Fulking PC applied for a grant for work to be carried out in Clappers Lane.
The grant was awarded and Fulking PC appointed Edburton Contractors to carry out the work on two areas of Clappers Lane, the North End and by The Sands.
When Edburton Contractors met with WSCC in December it was decided that a full road closure was not necessary.

Michael Brown of CPRE writes in the Mid Sussex Times:
Both Horsham and Mid Sussex District Councils are in advanced stages of developing long term plans for their Districts: neither of their plans calls for any new market town to meet their Districts’ housing needs. As to location, it is difficult to envisage somewhere less suited to a mega-development than the lovely open countryside around Wineham with no significant local unemployment, with no road, rail or other infrastructure, and on low lying fields prone to flooding from the Adur. Not to mention the barn owls, nightingales and other wonderful wildlife.
We challenge Mayfield to publish the ecological and flood reports that it claims to have commissioned so that we can all judge for ourselves.

The wrong kind of snow
The Worthing Herald reports:
Despite £800,000 being spent fixing the drainage on the A27, the busy trunk-road is still vulnerable to flooding with fed-up motorists facing yet more delays last week.
After months of disruption and lane closures in 2012, the dual carriageway still could not cope with the volume of water coming off the South Downs this winter.
But the Highways Agency denies that its drainage work has failed, arguing that it was never meant to deal with this kind of flooding.
Mayfield runoff
The LAMBS website has another interesting article, this one on the implications of the Mayfield development for the regional hydrology:
“Every time it rains there would be massive floods which could wipe out Shoreham,” says Frank Preston who worked on the river for 30 years, as a Flood Defence Agent for Southern Water Authority. “The extra impervious run-off from houses and roads, that sort of thing, would just overpower the river.”

John Donaldson, former Operations Manager for the Environment Agency, with 35 years of experience in the water industry, says he was “horrified” when he heard of the plan. “The impact of the drainage system and surface water run-off will be a nightmare,” he says. “We can hardly manage the run-off that we’ve got at the present time. There’d be even greater flooding without doubt – to land, to property, to road systems and transport – everything. The upland catchment already has enough water in the meadows and fields – we cannot take any more water.”
..
[Peter Haworth Booth:] “The implications of Mayfield are enormous. I think a lot of houses just won’t be habitable. I don’t know what the quantities of water are but the speed of the run-off is going to cause mega problems from here down to Bramber.”

Flooding closes Woods Mill
Woods Mill nature reserve will be closed this weekend due to flooding. They hope to re-open on Monday.

I have just been advised by Edburtons that work still cannot start on Clappers Lane due to the weather. They will update me again next week.

I have just been updated by Edburtons who have been unable to start the work on Clappers Lane due to the current weather and that it is too wet for ditch clearance. The work has been rescheduled to start next Wednesday weather permitting. I will let you know if this changes again.
