Our most conscientious readers will recall that the same stretch of road was closed for much the same reason a couple of years ago: “dripping tap entails nine week road closure”.
Fulking Parish Council, £13,529.03 to install new piped culverts and ditch work in Clappers Lane to increase capacity and allow surface water to drain.
Also of local interest:
.. more than £29,000 for Albourne Parish Council for ditch and gully work on Henfield Road, near Oak Vale Cottages, which is prone to flooding.
If you have a watercourse, ditch, stream, river or culvert on, or next to, your land, you are known as a ‘riparian owner’. Riparian owners are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of watercourses on their land to ensure that they are not a flood risk to other people or property. Well maintained watercourses can significantly benefit the local community by reducing flood risk and creating habitats for wildlife.
Under law, the riparian responsibilities for landowners are to:
- Ensure the flow of water is not obstructed or polluted;
- Maintain the bottom and sides of the watercourse (including managing any trees and vegetation growing on the banks);
- Remove any obstructions, such as rubbish, fallen branches or garden waste;
- Maintain any structures (such as trash screens, culverts, weirs and mill gates) on it.

Council elections are coming up in 2019, and it’s not just the Parish Council…
Both West Sussex and Mid Sussex are urging candidates to come forward. Just imagine what it would do for Fulking to have one of its residents as a district or county councillor.

West Sussex County Council has initiated a six week public consultation regarding their Integrated Risk Management Plan. The consultation runs until Monday 28 May. The plan explains the fire service’s activities in detail on:
- Prevention — educating the community on how to reduce risks through safe and well visits, school visits and other training.
- Protection — providing safer public spaces within the built environment, fire safety inspections and enforcement.
- Response — sending fire appliances and firefighters to emergency incidents. This can include fires, road traffic collisions, flooding etc.
- People — how we address the challenges we face in delivering a highly trained, diverse workforce.
- Value for money — ensuring everything we do is as cost efficient as possible (see photo, above).
- Partnership and collaboration — how we will work with other organisations to achieve our organisational aims.
