Sussex Countryside Awards 2017
The Countryside Awards are open to any project or enterprise, large or small, completed between December 2010 and January 2017. The closing date for entries is 31st March 2017. Categories include Rural Enterprise, Environmental Education, New Sussex Landscapes, and The Making Places Design Award. Further information here.

Recycle your Christmas tree
Residents with a green bin can put their tree directly into it, as long as the lid closes firmly. Residents who do not have a green bin can take their tree to Rushfields until Friday 13th January 2017.
Tony Bradley-Hole, RIP
Tony’s brother, Christopher, notes that:
His first pub was The Lamb at Lewes. His subsequent success at The Royal Oak at Barcombe was recognised by the brewery, which asked him to take over the (at the time) run-down Shepherd & Dog at Fulking. With his outgoing and welcoming character and an inspiring menu, he rapidly turned this famous pub into the go-to destination just outside Brighton.

Tony Brooks writes:
From the mid 1970s until the 1990s, Tony Bradley-Hole took over the Shepherd and Dog. In 1978, at the time of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, a fancy dress parade for children took place along The Street in Fulking, finishing with a tea party for the entire village in the pub car park, hosted by the Bradley-Holes. Later that year the pub also organised a torchlight procession through the village which culminated in a bonfire and firework display, on what is today, the front lawn of Cannonberries on the Poynings Road. Similarly, for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, the pub offered breakfast to start the day. Villagers then went home to watch the ceremony on television and returned to the pub afterwards for food, drink and a celebration that lasted until midnight.
The Women’s Land Army — A Sussex Connection
CHANGE: Ian Everest has had to postpone his talk to Henfield History Group originally scheduled for 8:00pm on Tuesday 10th January 2017 in the Free Church Hall, Coopers Way, Henfield until May this year. In his place, Professor Douglas Chamberlain, an eminent cardiologist who set up the first paramedic course in England, will give a talk on the History of Resuscitation.
Bobservation 27. In with the new and out with the old
You may think the title above refers to me. No such luck I’m afraid! However, we might reflect on what a successful year 2016 was for Fulking. A very good Fair in July with the new format of including stalls in the Street working very well. A good Call My Bluff in the incredible Shepherd & Dog which must now be the most popular country pub in Sussex. The Christmas Market has become such a successful event that potential stallholders have to be turned away. This year’s Christmas Party was very well attended and seems to have been enjoyed by everyone. However, pride of place this year must go to the amazingly attractive Downland Calendar for 2017, which I understand has achieved sales of 800 copies.
Let us not forget the regular village activities that you support by organizing or attending. For example: Pigeon Post; then there is Yoga, Messy Church, Craft and Chat, Toddlers/family coffee, Book Nook, Games Evening, Carol Singing around the village, St Andrews Day Quiz, Plays and musical evenings in the Village Hall, a Beagle pack and one of the best cricket clubs in Sussex. Not bad for a village of a little over 200 residents!
So forward into 2017 and may it be a happy, successful, and healthy year for all of you. If you are not already involved in village activities, please come along and help. You will be most welcome.
