A letter from Sussex Police, dated 14th June, and pushed into a letterbox near the junction of Clappers Lane and The Street, reports that there was an attempted burglary “in the area” at 10:20pm on Sunday 2nd June and asks to be notified if any suspicious persons or vehicles were seen “in the area” or if unexpected callers turned up that weekend. If this rings any bells, call 101 and cite reference 47130023578.

Terrific Trees

Do you know your beech from your birch or hazel from holly? Come and spend a fun day finding out all about the trees at Woods Mill, what their wood was used for and how they are an important wildlife habitat. Suitable for children aged 6-11 years. Parents/carers should not accompany children. Booking essential. 20 August 2013 – 10:30am – 2:30pm. Please book via Sussex Wildlife Trust or ring 01273 497561. [At the time of writing, on-line booking for this event does not seem to be possible so probably best to phone them.]

Public Transport

Aunt Clarissa has notified you of her impending triennial visit. The relevant authorities confiscated her driving licence a couple of years ago. And she has declined your kindly offer to send Soames over in the Mercedes GL to pick her up at Hassocks station.

House fire closes A2037 in Small Dole

Update 9:30am, 10th June: today’s Argus now has a detailed story with pictures.

The West Sussex Gazette reported at 2:23pm:

A road has been closed this afternoon (Sunday June 9) in Small Dole following a fire. The A2037 Shoreham Road has been shut in the village near Henfield and there is slow traffic at the New Hall Lane junction. This is due to a fire at a house and shed. A number of fire appliances are at the scene.

The Argus reported at 2:12pm:

Fire crews are tackling a fire at a house in Small Dole in Henfield. West Sussex Fire and Rescue were called just before noon to reports of the fire in Shoreham Road. It is believed nobody has been injured in the fire but the house has been substantially damaged. Four engines are still at the scene.
