Pizza and Pop
As part of Children’s Hospice Week, the Steyning Friends of Chestnut Tree House are holding a pizza and pop event on Sunday, June 22nd, at Steyning Cricket Club from 5:00pm until 10:00pm. There will be home-made, wood-fired pizzas served up with live music, games, pottery painting, face painting and a raffle. Tickets are £3 and under 16s go free. They are available from The Steyning Bookshop, or on 01903 812062.

Botany surveys

Wild flowers on chalk grassland

From 10:00am–12:30pm on Friday 13th June and 6:00–8:30pm on Thursday 17th July. Help with an ongoing monitoring project by getting involved in a botany survey of the chalk grassland outside Steyning. All levels of experience welcomed, including beginners at wild flower identification. Bring a packed meal if you want to stay on for a picnic after the survey. Meet at the log pile on the Rifle Range, Steyning [Map Ref: TQ 168,113]. Free event.

Two choral concerts

Kaleidoscope Singers
Cantatrice will perform on Friday, May 30th, at the Steyning Centre, 12:15pm–1:00pm, while Kaleidoscope Singers perform on Thursday, June 5th, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Penlands, Steyning, 8:00pm–9:00pm. The evening concert will feature madrigals, sacred music and Stephen Foster arrangements, and includes a string ensemble and Hannah Corcoran on saxophone. More details here.

Steyning Grammar events

Steyning Grammar School
Steyning Grammar will be celebrating 400 years of existence at the end of May with a variety of events including:

  • 24th May: the opening of the Church Street School and grounds to the public with archive material relating to the school’s history on display;
  • 24th-25th May: three performances each day of ‘Carvings, Corridors and Timbres’, a musical about the school, at the Church Street site;
  • 26th–28th May: a heritage quilt will be on display in the Church of St Andrew and St Cuthman;
  • 29th May: Janet Pennington will give a talk on ‘Steyning Grammar School, 400 Years of Education’ at 2:00pm in Bolton House;
  • Until 31st August 2014: an exhibition titled ‘The Scholar’s Tale — 400 Years of Schooling in Steyning’ at Steyning Museum.
