Bobservation 22. The Parish of Fulking

Buttercups with downs in backgroundWalking on Newtimber Hill on a fine morning this week I looked down on the amazing view across the Downland Villages of Poynings, Fulking and Edburton. In particular the long shape of the parish of Fulking stretches out from the Downs to Holmbush Lane and what a wonderful sight it is on a summer’s day.

How fortunate we are to live in this wonderful part of the country and enjoy all the benefits of the rural life.

Fulking itself has so much to offer; a great pub, a refurbished village hall, a fair, yoga, toddlers mornings, a book shop, beagles, a highly successful cricket club, a good size field for village events. The location of the village is only five minutes to shopping, fifteen minutes to a main line railway station and access to a half hourly bus service to Brighton, Burgess Hill or Horsham and 30 minutes to Gatwick.

It is so easy to just accept this great privilege without realizing that there are few places that offer a better way of life for us, our children and grandchildren. We are indeed very lucky.

You may think I have rambled on too long and sound like an Estate Agent’s pitch but I do want you to know how much I appreciate living in Fulking.  I hope you do too.

Walk, Tea, Cake!

st catherines hospiceRenowned for its tasty teas and scrummy cakes, the annual Balcombe Walk will put on its famous spread again this year – on Sunday 11th September. And you can have some. The one small proviso is that you first of all enjoy a wonderful country walk and raise sponsorship or make a donation to support St. Catherine’s Hospice, Crawley.

For the 26th year, the Haywards Heath Support Group for St. Catherine’s Hospice is proud to present the Balcombe Fundraising Walk, at Victory Hall, Stockcroft Road, Balcombe RH17 6HP.

The Walk takes in some of the very best of the wonderful Sussex countryside, with fabulous views. You may want to take on the challenge of the full 12.5 mile circular route or you may set yourself a gentler target of 4, 6 or 9 miles; if you do that, we’ll send a chauffeur to get you back to Balcombe! Whatever your choice, you set your own pace and we’ll welcome your support. Afterwards you will have take and cake, and a certificate to mark your achievement on behalf of St Catherine’s.

If you’ve joined the Walk before, you’ll know what a great day you can have. If you haven’t, we want the chance to show you. Bring your family, your friends, your dogs on leads, and have a great day out.

Every day it costs St Catherine’s more than £17,000 to provide their free care to local people across Sussex and Surrey, so why not show your support by taking part in this year’s Balcombe Walk? Sign up today at www.stch.org.uk/balcombewalk or call the Events Team on 01293 447355. You can also sign up on the day itself and we hope to see lots of familiar and new faces there.

Downland Calendar 2017

The Downland Calendar 2017 is now well on the way. Our local sponsors have all been secured and we have selected 13 wonderful photos for the calendar [12 months plus the cover]. A very big thank you to all who submitted photos for this project.

Many beautiful photos were sent in but sadly some were not of sufficiently high resolution to be included, or didn’t make the final selection.

The calendar will be going to press before long to showcase the beauty of Fulking and our surroundings. We hope to launch what will be a very beautiful product sometime in September, in plenty of time to maximise sales. All proceeds from the calendar will go to help maintain the village hall.
