Saddlescombe Farm, Sunday 8th February 2015, 10:00am — 1:00pm, all tickets £3.00, children and dogs on leads welcome, slightly challenging walk, advance booking not needed.

This walk starts at Devil’s Dyke and gives you an opportunity to discover an ancient downland farm and its surroundings. Saddlescombe Farm has seen over 1000 years of history and still retains many of its old buildings, including the donkey well and 17th century barn. The surrounding downland holds even greater allure with over 3000 years of stories to tell. There will a break at the Hiker’s Rest tearoom at Saddlescombe before the return walk to Devil’s Dyke.

Wreath DIY at Saddlescombe

Create your own Christmas wreath with materials collected from the downs. Take a festive walk and collect your holly and ivy. Return to historic Saddlescombe farm to make your very own Christmas decorations in front of a roaring fire in the Tudor Scullery. Mulled apple juice, mince pies and roast chestnuts will be included.

Saddlescombe Farm Heritage Open Day

Tours of the 17th century Threshing Barn, Tudor Scullery and Donkey Wheel. You can also venture further afield for tours on surrounding Newtimber Hill. Refreshments at the Hiker’s Rest cafe. Children and dogs welcome. Parking £2 — follow signposts near Devil’s Dyke on the day. Sunday 14th September 2014, 10:30am–3:30pm, free admission.

Fungal Foray

Join mycologist Martin Allinson for a day of recording as many species of fungi as possible across Newtimber Hill on Friday 3rd October from 9:45am to 3:00pm. Wear suitable clothing and bring lunch. Tea and cake will be served upon return to Saddlescombe. Supervised children are welcome. Booking essential. Slightly more information here.

No rest for the hikers

You saw Sold as Seen at Fulking Fair and, at 7:00pm on the 15th August, you can see them again at The Hiker’s Rest in Saddlescombe. Tickets are on sale at the cafe, £7.50 without food, £15.00 to include buffet.

Saddlescombe Road closure

Saddlescombe Road and Devils Dyke Road will be closed between 12.30am and 9.00am on Sunday 13th July thanks to the 2014 Night Time London to Brighton Bike Ride. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained and alternative routes for other traffic will be signed on site.

South Downs Society walk

Thursday June 12th, 2014, led by Brenda Mann and Shirley Murrell. Six miles, some steep hills but taken at an easy pace. Meet at 10:30am at Newtimber Church, for coffee or tea. Walk up Wolstonbury Hill and then on to The Plough at Pyecombe for lunch, or bring a picnic lunch. Afterwards walk to Saddlescombe and return to Newtimber by 3:00pm.
