A place for your dog at the University of Sussex?

academic_dogHazel Silver writes:-

Sussex University is looking for four-legged volunteers to help PhD students studying dog psychology at Falmer. If you and your hound are willing, please contact the lovely Vicky Ratcliffe (07962 324770 or V.Ratcliffe@sussex.ac.uk) to book a time.

My mutt has taken part in a voice and sound recognition test (enthusiastically because they gave him lots of treats). It takes about 30 minutes.

If you can think of any other dog owners who might be game, please pass this on.

Portable defibrillator machines refresher

220px-Defibrillation_Electrode_PositionTricia Robinson writes:-

I’m organising a refresher course on CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the use of the portable defibrillator machines. It will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 25th January 2014 starting at 9.30 am.

All ages welcome, you never know when or where you will need this skill. It is far simpler these days, & the machines tell you clearly what to do. I had to perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation on Lucie, I was relieved I’d just been updated, but it was frightening and lonely. Hence I feel strongly about as many people being trained as possible.

Can you help us to support older people in your local community?

RoyalVoluntaryService
The Royal Voluntary Service is a volunteer organisation that enriches the lives of older people and their families across Britain.

Volunteers are vital to Royal Voluntary Service. Without them we simply wouldn’t exist. Currently, more than 40,000 dedicated community volunteers deliver services that help older people live the life they want to. Whether it’s taking an older person to the shops, delivering a meal to them or even walking their dog – our volunteers make a big difference that is appreciated and valued. Through them, we want to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age. We believe old age should be celebrated, and so we should: we’re 75 years old and still going strong.

We are always looking for new, enthusiastic volunteers who can help us to make sure older people get the support they need and we’d really appreciate your help. I have attached a volunteer recruitment poster and would be extremely grateful if you could find a spot for it and encourage people from your local community to join us.

Anyone over the age of 14 can join and the great thing about volunteering is that it’s so flexible. You can fit it around all of the other things that you have to do. Whether you can spare a few hours once a week or fortnight or can give a couple of days each month we will have an opportunity for you.

We all know that the number of older people in our communities is set to grow in the future and we have to be ready. So over the next few years we will be expanding our services and developing new ones so our need for community volunteers will be even greater.

If you, or someone you know, think you can help then please contact our volunteering department on 0845 601 4670, email volunteer@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or search for opportunities online at www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year,

Many thanks,

Be an Angel – recycle your Christmas tree

christmas_tree_recyclefront_MSDC_LogoOnce the festive fun is over, local residents are reminded that they can recycle their real Christmas tree at a number of convenient locations right across Mid Sussex.

Mid Sussex District Council is keen to help get 2014 off to a green start and has set up a number of local collection points so there will always be a place nearby where residents can recycle their real Christmas tree.
Residents with a green garden waste collection bin can put their tree directly into it, as long as the lid can still close firmly. Alternatively, people can take their real tree along to one of the Household Waste Recycling Sites at Fairbridge Way in Burgess Hill or Imberhorne Lane in East Grinstead.

There are also a wide variety of local drop off points in towns and villages across the district.

Sites will be open between Friday 3rd January and Friday 17th January 2014.
