Today sees the continuation of our series of posts on the history of St. Andrew’s. You can read F.A. Howe’s 1949 essay on St. Katherine’s Chapel and its rather gruesome link to a popular firework; Lindsay Fleming’s 1958 article on the Hippisley Memorial, whose restoration he supervised, and the wording of the no longer legible verse that appears on it; and the results of Chris Comber’s recent work on the identities of those former residents of Fulking and Edburton whose names appear on one or both of the two War Memorials.

Every local garden enthusiast should take the opportunity to flip through the photos of the astonishing garden at Downmere in the centre of Poynings which Knight Frank has generously made available on the web. Downmere was the home of the late Geoffrey Harris from 1978-2013.
Bobservation No. 8
Most of you will have enjoyed the amenity afforded by the North Town Field at some time or another.
Over the years we have held Fairs, Rounders, Dog shows, Call my Bluff, Barn dancing, a Caribbean event, Live theatre, Yoga etc., and of course there is also the Playground.
The Playground is leased by the Parish Council from the Trustees of the North Town Field.
Whilst the Parish Council are responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the Playground, and indeed an inspection is made by one of them each week for safety reasons, keeping the equipment clean is not part of their responsibility, and nor should it be. Would it be too much to ask the parents of village children who use the Playground to get together a working party to clean the equipment from time to time ?
I like to think that Fulking villagers pride themselves on the community spirit that has been created, most recently with the restoration of the Ladybrook Spring and The Argus award for Fulking Fair, the community event of the year in Sussex. It would be good to add the Playground cleanup to these.

Poynings Garden Fete
Saturday June 6th at 2.00pm in the Rectory garden. Teas, cakes, stalls, puppets, maypole, live music and a local clairvoyant has predicted that there will be a dastardly murder that day, maybe someone you know? If you’re not there, you won’t find out*. Proceeds in aid of running costs and general repair of our beautiful 14th century Church.
