Hedges, nesting birds and dogs?

Nesting-Birds-A477-2The Parish Council would like to remind everybody about their responsibility towards wildlife particularly at this time of the year.

This is the time of year when everything starts growing madly, and as a consequence, this is when we start pruning and trimming to make our gardens look their best.

However, please spare a thought for our wildlife, in particular the birds. This is the season when they have already chosen their nesting sites and are bringing up their chicks; taking down or hard pruning established hedges and trees can be disastrous for them. Using electric hedge trimmers for prolonged periods can scare away the parent birds, meaning abandoned nests and chicks. If possible, try to plan hard pruning before 1st March and after 31st July at the earliest, ideally end of August, and keep tidying to a minimum during these times – many birds have two or three broods, especially if weather conditions are adverse.

hedge_cutterIt is actually an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 intentionally to take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built – for example, if you know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest in the process.
We also need to be aware of ground nesting birds, such as skylarks, pheasant, meadow pipit, when walking our dogs, especially when walking through ‘open access land’ (in our area Fulking escarpment and the north face of The Downs ). From 1st March to 31st July, dogs must be kept on a short lead on open access land to protect these ground nesting birds. At all times of the year, dogs should be kept on a short lead when in the vicinity of livestock. We are seeing an increasing number of incidents on Fulking escarpment of dogs chasing cattle and sheep and the owners being unable to call them back under control. As a reminder, farmers are within their rights to shoot dogs which are worrying their livestock.

We live in the countryside, and wildlife and livestock are a large part of this. We as residents should try to set an example and politely remind others who use and enjoy this beautiful area of their responsibilities.

Fulking Potluck Party – 8th June 2013

potluck_partyCome along to the Pot Luck Party in the Village Hall on Saturday 8th June at 7pm!

The idea is to make it as informal as possible so that everyone can get involved by making their favourite food. And to make it hassle-free we’re cutting down on washing up by asking everyone to bring along their own plates and cutlery.

Just let us know what you’re planning to cook to make sure we have a good range. We might have oodles of salads but be desperate for puddings. Or we might be short on savouries so we might ask if you can bring along that type of dish.

So what’s left to bring? …the booze, of course!

Fulking Drama – Land Rover plunges over the top

Land Rover - white roof still in place
Land Rover – white roof in place
Local Fulking resident Sheena Trist quickly called the emergency services last night when she heard screams for help.

Incredibly luckily, Sheena was saying goodbye to someone on her drive when she heard cries for help coming from the hill. A man called out from the crashed vehicle and they had to shout to each other. Sheena realised that she’d better phone for an ambulance.

Emergency vehicles very quickly turned up in large numbers. There were reportedly about twenty Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade vehicles at one stage parked along the Edburton Road near Perching Drove. Many were left with their engines running and windscreen wipers wiping as the emergency service personnel had rushed on foot up the hill to come to the aid of the trapped people.

The 26 year old driver was trapped for over two hours as the Fire Brigade gradually cut bits off the Land Rover to free him. He was then airlifted away to hospital by the Coastguard helicopter.

The white Land Rover had been driving along the top of the hill on the South Downs Way with three occupants on board. At some stage it seemed to lose its grip and careered down the very steep side of the hill. The hill is about 400 feet high at that point. The car hit a bank and then came to rest about half way down the hill. The location it ended up made it inaccessible to all the emergency vehicles.

The BBC News website reports that Sussex Police said the driver had suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, while two other men had minor injuries.

You can also read reports at The Argus, Brighton and Hove News, the BBC and The Mail Online (video footage too).
