
A talk to be given at Beeding & Bramber Local History Society by Dr. Janet Pennington of the Sussex School of Archaeology. Dr. Pennington was the archivist at Lancing College for eighteen years and is the author of Chanctonbury Ring: The Story of a Sussex Landmark. Saddlescombe Farm Heritage Open Day

Tours of the 17th century Threshing Barn, Tudor Scullery and Donkey Wheel. You can also venture further afield for tours on surrounding Newtimber Hill. Refreshments at the Hiker’s Rest cafe. Children and dogs welcome. Parking £2 — follow signposts near Devil’s Dyke on the day. Sunday 14th September 2014, 10:30am–3:30pm, free admission.
Fungal Foray

Join mycologist Martin Allinson for a day of recording as many species of fungi as possible across Newtimber Hill on Friday 3rd October from 9:45am to 3:00pm. Wear suitable clothing and bring lunch. Tea and cake will be served upon return to Saddlescombe. Supervised children are welcome. Booking essential. Slightly more information here.
The Big Picnic

The Steyning Downland Scheme is hosting its annual picnic on Sunday 7th September from 12:30pm–3:30pm at the Old Rifle Range off Mouse Lane, Steyning, parking at the Cuthman Centre. Attractions will include tractor rides, games, face-painting, bushcraft, walks and free bacon butties. Free event, no need to book, just show up with a picnic, a rug and (possibly) an umbrella.
Poynings Fun Day

Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August, music, beer tent, stalls, bring-your-own-picnic:
- 10:30am Fun run, junior fun run & sprint, cycle race, all at
the Blacksmith’s Field; - 02:00pm Presentation of fun run awards at the Village Hall;
- 02:30pm Tug-of-war, north versus south;
- 03:00pm Children’s traditional races (egg & spoon, etc.);
- 04:30pm Calling of raffle.
