The Sussex Wildlife Trust has developed a Forest School programme specifically for pre-school age children (2-5 year olds) at Woods Mill. Nature Tots is a programme focused around getting pre-school children engaged in wildlife and outdoor activity. It begins on March 5th. More information here.

Clayton walk
Sussex Wildlife Trust is offering a two-part walk starting at 9:45am on Saturday 8th February:
Meet at the far end of the Jack and Jill Inn car park, Clayton, BN6 9PD (Explorer Map 122: TQ 198142) in good time for a 9.45 departure. The Inn is located on the A273 but does not open until noon so we will not be ordering our lunch beforehand. The walk will be in two halves both starting at the pub. The morning walk of about three and a half miles will include one fairly steep climb and will be along Underhill Lane to downland including the Jack and Jill windmills (with spectacular views, weather permitting) and back through Clayton. If the weather is bad there will be an alternative walk avoiding exposure at the top of the Downs!
The shorter afternoon walk is fairly flat and will pass through sheep pastures and woods. Walk led by Rita (Tel: 01273 843395 or 07930 877224 on the day).
Wolstonbury in winter
A guided walk exploring the woods and ancient downland of one of the most remarkable hills on the South Downs. Here you will discover ancient beech trees, a mysterious history and a bizarre lunar landscape created by billions of ants.

Call for contributors
This website managed to deliver an average of just over a post a day during 2013. However, there are three areas of interest to many locals where our coverage has been very weak:
- Children — there are many more in the village now than has normally been the case in recent years. We could usefully include a lot more news about their activities, their schools, their successes, their failures (okay, perhaps not), and their parenting.
- Farming — we all live surrounded by farms. We walk the public footpaths through the fields. We can see the crops and animals. Occasionally we see a tractor doing what tractors do. But, for those residents who are not involved in the farming, that’s about it. Many would be interested in learning more. For example, the implications of changes in policy or regulation for farming in Fulking.
- Local businesses — relative to the the size of the population, there are many hidden away in Fulking and the immediately adjacent villages. They expand and contract, introduce new products or services, employ new people, enlarge their premises, and so on. All of which is of potential interest to readers of this website.
Unassisted, we are unlikely to be able to improve our coverage of these three areas in 2014. If you think you could help with one of them, please get in touch with John.

Wreath DIY at Saddlescombe
Create your own Christmas wreath with materials collected from the downs. Take a festive walk and collect your holly and ivy. Return to historic Saddlescombe farm to make your very own Christmas decorations in front of a roaring fire in the Tudor Scullery. Mulled apple juice, mince pies and roast chestnuts will be included.

SDNPA Travel Grant Scheme
Not a single school in BN5, BN6, BN44, or BN45 is included in the scheme.
Pupils at Albourne Primary, Ashurst Primary, the Good Start, Lancing College, St. Peter’s Henfield, Shoreham College, Steyning Grammar, the Towers, Upper Beeding Primary, and others are not eligible for this scheme. Pupils at Balfour, Blatchington Mill, Dorothy Stringer, St. Luke’s, Varndean, and Westdene Primary do qualify, however.

Identification of trees in winter
Wolstonbury Hill: take a walk with tree expert Mike Bottrill to learn the art of identifying trees in winter. Start at Clayton recreation ground near the Jack & Jill pub, Hassocks.

Fungal Foray
Bioblitz — The Devil’s Dyke great fungal foray: join us for a day of hunting and recording as many species of fungi as possible, across Southwick Hill, on the South Downs, near Brighton. A team of scientists will be on hand to identify and record all that is found. The order of the day: 10:00am Meet at The Mile Oak pub; Introduction to the day. 10:15am Go out hunting for fungi on Southwick Hill. 12:00 noon Lunch on the hill. 2:00pm. Finish off the day with a cup of tea and cake at Mile Oak farm tea shop (not provided). Finish survey with a quick round up of the days findings. Friday, 1st November 2013, 10:00am — 2:00pm.
