Request for indigenous plants

Sussex Plant Books
Northbrook College are due to start at Lady Brook Spring on 14th June after the site has been cleared and the lay-by cordoned off. The work will only be carried out at weekends and should take around four weeks. The College and Community Volunteer Team will carry out the bulk of the work and then hand over to the village to landscape the site. Donations of indigenous plants are hereby solicited. The plants will not be needed until the end of June or the beginning of July. If any Fulking gardeners are splitting plants before then, please bear this worthy project in mind.

Fulking Village Hall Garden Opening 11 May 2014

From left to right, Peter Jones, who carved the inscription, Michael Trist, Vice Chair of the Parish Council, Gill Milner, Colin, Jen Green and Chris Gildersleeve. Unable to attend, Helen Zeilinger designed and implemented the garden restoration. In addition to Rushfields in Poynings, local sponsorship was provided by AVS Fencing in Woodmancote, who assisted with the fencing, Swains Farm in Henfield, who offered turf, and Hamfelds of Henfield, who supplied many of the plants.

Ash to ashes [update]

Chalara fraxinea around the South Downs
This soft-focus map shows Chalara fraxinea outbreaks in our region as of April this year. It does not look too alarming. But the disease is spreading rapidly and DEFRA now expects that 50% of ash trees in West Sussex will be infected by 2018. If you own ash trees you will probably want to take a look at the report [PDF] they issued on 30th April. Conveniently, it also covers the Oak Processionary Moth. In addition, they have issued a synopsis of the relevant research [PDF].

The Forestry Commission has released an app for Apple and Android devices that will assist you in recognizing and reporting tree diseases:
