Met Office Weather Warning – Monday 28th October
National Severe Weather Warning Service – Chief Forecasters Assessment
A strong, high-level jet is expected to engage warm low level air to give rise to a rapidly moving low pressure system later on Sunday. This is expected to run northeastwards, probably across England and Wales, with very strong winds on its southern and western flanks.
There is the potential for gusts of over 80mph, especially on exposed coasts, bothin southwesterly winds ahead of the low and west to northwesterly winds behind it.
The Met Office have issued an Amber Alert of Wind
Valid from 00:05 on Mon, 28th Oct 2013 until 21:00 on Mon, 28th Oct 2013
A very intense low pressure system is forecast to run northeastwards across the countryearly on Monday, bringing the potential for an exceptionally windy spell of weather for southern parts of the UK. At the same time, persistent, heavy rain could cause some surface water flooding.
At this early stage there is uncertainty about the timing, intensity and track of the low. However, the public should be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures, bringing disruption to transport and power supplies.

A magnet for rubbish
The West Sussex County Times reports:
Sweeptech [have applied] to change the use of a site from a storage and distribution centre to a waste recycling facility off Shoreham Road, just south of Henfield and north of Small Dole, [it] will recycle 75,000 tonnes of waste per year collected from road sweeping and gully clearing. ..
Henfield resident Adrian Jessup lives just 100 yards from the proposed 22 acre site, also known as the Old Brickworks. “Sweeptech have said there will be 35 movements a day from the site onto Shoreham Road (A2037), which is situated on a bend that has no overtaking on it, and if they can’t go through Henfield or Small Dole they’ll have to take Horn Lane, a small treacherous road.” ..
Small Dole residents have battled waste facilities in the past, including Horton Landfill Site, which opened in 1991 and closed in 2011. Small Dole Action Committee member Chris Warren said residents are still ‘suffering the consequences of pollution’. “Small Dole seems to be a magnet for waste processing. It’s more than we need,” said Mr Warren. “We have had waste lorries for donkey’s years and there’s been damage done to the roads as a result. There will be a dozen residents directly affected by this.” Mr Warren said he is also concerned about the waste vehicles’ route, and claimed it could potentially affect Henfield, Woodmancote, Small Dole and Upper Beeding.
Sussex 4×4 Response to help police
Sussex 4×4 Response are to help police deal with major emergencies. The heavy snow that has fallen in the county over the last few years has shown the benefit of having an extra fleet of all-weather vehicles available to the emergency services. The idea was trialled successfully by Sussex Police during the sudden snowfall in the county in March when Sussex 4×4 Response volunteers helped get 999 control centre staff to their offices to keep the emergency telephone system working. Volunteers will have to undergo first aid training, learn advanced driver skills and be given health and safety guidance before they can get involved in the scheme. They will also vetted by the force and would have to sign a health declaration and confirm their vehicle is in good working order.
A2037 flooding
The Argus is reporting:
Reports of A2037 Henfield Road partially blocked due to flooding around High Street. There are reports traffic is taking it in turns to pass near to Towers Covent School.
Update 10:35am — this is now resolved.

Lady Brook Spring
The PC has recently been in discussions with WSCC Highways about a very different proposal, possibly involving flint work and sympathetic planting along with measures to ensure that safety is improved to reduce the risk of drowning by children and animals. The very stark (some may say hideous) structure that has been built addresses neither safety nor aesthetics – indeed, the new railings (being very open) have vastly increased the risks, as well as being totally out of keeping with the surroundings.
The PC has contacted the Highways department with an urgent request to rectify the situation; we will publish any information on this as soon as we can.
If anybody has any suggestions or thoughts as to how we could make this a special feature of our village, please contact Andrea Dickson – andreadicksonfpc@gmail.com.
