Messy Church Planning Meeting

Messy Church Logo - text on red blob
We are hoping to start a new venture in Fulking, starting in May.

It’s a monthly gathering of craft/music/painting groups in the Village Hall to work on a project with a religious theme (e.g. Noah, Shepherd and sheep). We will have a short ‘service’ including all the work done, followed by tea for the children and probably a drink for the adults. All this in approx. an hour and a half (probably Friday 4.30-6.00pm).

We’re holding a planning meeting on Wednesday 22nd April, at 5pm in the Village Hall. We would really welcome your input and views.

Reverend Caroline (456)

The results are in…

Parish Council Election Result

Although the outcome of the General Election is unknown, the Parish Council election result isn’t.  The election was uncontested, so the final result has already been declared. This means that the community’s views will continue to discussed and represented by locals rather than by Mid Sussex District Council.

Link to official announcement with names of your new councillors.

Water Supply Proposal – April 2015

Discussions between South Eastern Water, Southern Water, The National Trust and West Sussex County Council have lead to a proposal to implement a villager’s idea that the water supply system emanating at the Ram House by the Shepherd & Dog could be reinstated.

The advantages of this would be free drinking water available to villagers and passersby at both village pumps, availability of fresh water for washing at the Ruskin Fountain and a supply of water in the village in times of drought.

The disadvantages for some would be the permanent disconnection of the current water supply to all properties in the Street. This would, of course, mean that water for household, garden and indeed swimming pool use would have to be obtained by hand.  Admittedly this would prove to be an anathema to some villagers although in some cases the gardener could provide the necessary manual labour involved.

It is proposed to hold a public meeting and take a vote of those attending in which case a majority of villagers would decide the outcome of the proposal.

Craft & Chat

Colourful Embroidery

Possibly one of the best kept secrets in the village has just come to light…

While nobody was looking, Trish Robinson and Chris Webb have established a Chat & Craft group which meets in the Village Hall on Thursday afternoon every 2nd and 4th week of the month – between 2 and 4 pm. Its been going on for several months…

The idea is that you bring along whatever (transportable) craft project you are undertaking and do it in the company of other like-minded people. While ‘crafting’ you can also indulge in interesting conversation and have a cup of tea.

All are welcome – and as you may have guessed the emphasis is on the chat more than the craft!

Summer Breeze Bus

Banner for Bus from The Dyke to Brighton

Brisk walks and bus rides – sounds like just the ticket.  The new 77 bus timetable is out for the Dyke to Brighton route.  This forms part of the “Breeze up to the Downs” partnership between B&H City Council, The National Trust and SDNP. It starts on 19th April, and from 14th June to 31st August you can, er, “do it topless”. More importantly it now connects with similar services to Stanmer Park and Ditchling Beacon.  More details here…

Keeping the Peace

We should like to comment on Bobservation no. 2 – Preston Nomads, published in Pigeon Post at Christmas. The gist of it was that there had been a “mini-furore” over the recent licence application and that the club was architecturally attractive, wasn’t a nuisance and that we should “count our blessings and see if we cannot appreciate the club more”.

Bobservation No 5

FPC3 - Bobservation 5Parish Councillors

Elections for Parish councillors will be held, at the end of the four year term, on May 7th this year.

Parish councils are a chance for villagers to express their opinion on local matters through their elected representatives. The Parish Council has no political allegiance.

Fulking Parish Council normally has five councillors, which is the number expected to be elected next May and, so long as only five villagers put their names forward for election, they will become the Parish Council. If more than five villagers put their names forward there will be a ballot on the same day as the Parliamentary election. The councillors then elected will appoint a Chair and a Vice Chair of the Parish Council. Parish councillors are unpaid but the Parish Clerk who is appointed by the Parish Council is a paid employee. On the occasion of this election we will have a new Parish Clerk, Derek Blackhall, and the current Parish Clerk, Andrea Dickson, will be leaving us to take up another post.
Although very frustrating at times, the rewards are being involved with the democratic process at its primary level, learning a great deal about Fulking, getting to know many villagers, and deciding what is in the best interest of the parish. In my experience you will make many friends as well as a few enemies but the satisfaction is very real.
I do encourage you to think about it seriously. Nominations need to be made between  March 30 and April 9 and details of how to apply will be on the village web-site.

Fulking deserves to be served by a sensible, dedicated Parish Council.

If you choose to stand you will not regret it.
