Clappers Lane + Truck = Mayhem

On Friday a truck missed the turn to AVS Fencing in Holmbush Lane and continued down Clappers Lane damaging vegetation and the fencing at Preston Nomads Cricket Ground where it turned around.

According to AVS, all suppliers are given directions and told not to go down Clappers Lane. However they believe that a contributory factor is that the sign on the corner of Clappers and Holmbush Lanes, which they have permission from WSCC to put there, was removed or at least not visible. AVS have mended the fencing and cleared up as best they can, but would appreciate any information about how the sign came to be tampered with. Contact: 01273 492969

Speed Indicator

An LED speed warning sign will shortly be installed at the entrance to our village on a temporary basis. The aim is to improve safety by reducing speeding as vehicles enter the village, to reinforce our speed limits and to collect average speed data.

It will be moved during the next two weeks and may return later in the year.

For the technically minded, these signs are called Speed Indication Devices and are provided by West Sussex County Council.  They display the speed vehicles approach the sign, as well as recording that speed, the date, time and the class of vehicle. No personal data (such as a number plate) is recorded.

Our cycling and Civil Defence correspondent, General Sir Frederick (”Tiger”) Nidgett, writes as follows:

The summer offensive continues. Garish hordes of gore-tex Visigoths and spandex Vandals will be blocking traffic and intimidating pets and pedestrians as they drive an aesthetic assault along the Clappers Lane salient, The Street, and Edburton Road on the evening of Sunday 15th July, between 20:00 and 21:30. An MTB patrol from Fulking Home Guard will be out earlier in the day to set cycle traps, install temporary misdirection signage, and leave a crate of complimentary nitrite-enhanced rehydration packs beside the pump house.

The village clear up on Sunday 15 April attracted a handful of enthusiasts, mostly as far I can ascertain, the ‘old’ hands.

Now this is quite acceptable and I can understand that newcomers to the village and those of you who are ensconced in your ivory castles do not wish to get involved in any village activities. However, I do think in the interest of cleanliness and the general look of the village  which,  after all, will affect the value of your freehold asset, each householder should take responsibility for keeping the roadside along the boundary of their property free of the rubbish which individuals periodically drop.

Newcomers may not be aware that the Council Tax which is levied on those of us living in the countryside provides a great deal less by way of services than that enjoyed by householders living in a town, in particular, the regular clearing of rubbish along the street. So to conclude this depressing plea, let us all take on the responsibility of keeping our own boundary free of rubbish on a regular basis and, dare I ask, perhaps showing a bit more interest in Fulking and the village activities.

On this note we still need volunteers for the fair on Sunday 29 July and Louise needs bottles for the Tombola.
