Shoreham Fort, Forthaven, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5HY, on Sunday 25th February from 11:00am–4:00pm. Come and join the volunteers and see what they’re up to. Tour of the fort will be at 2:00 pm and is free, although donations will be appreciated. The tour will take you into the tunnel, which is not usually open. Food for Fort will be serving hot drinks and home-made cake.
Matthew Jones, Assistant County Archivist at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester, will talk about the Royal Sussex Regiment’s role at Gallipoli, using photographs, letters, posters, diaries, and regimental records held by the Record Office. If you missed this talk when it was presented in Upper Beeding a couple of years ago, you can hear it at 7:45pm at The Steyning Centre on Wednesday 14th February.

It seems to have been a long wet dull winter and the ground is soggier than usual, making walking with the dog difficult because of the muddy conditions. The skies seem to have been unceasingly grey and sunshine has been at a premium. However at times like this the beginning of Spring is all the more welcome. At Furzefield we have primrose, snowdrop, celundine, daisy and crocus in flower, daffodils in bud and hazel catkins hanging from the trees. The winter avalanche of leaves and acorns has passed and the unwelcome amount of rain seems to have encouraged the bluebells whose leaf is well advanced and should lead on to an exceptional year of flowers mid to end of April. I do invite you to come and enjoy the carpet of blue when it arrives.
It is at times like these that, hopefully, a warm and sunny summer will follow. How fortunate we are to live in such a wonderful environment! Fulking is indeed a gem and is one of the finest jewels in the crown of the South Downs National Park and deserves all our efforts to preserve it that way.
Plans for the Fair on Sunday 29 July and the Call my Bluff on Friday 27 July are well under way. If you are interested in the latter give me a shout (271). Now is the time to have a look in your wine rack for the Tombola and let Louise & Jay (773) have those bottles someone brought as a gift but you are NEVER going to drink!
St. Andrew’s offers complete cardiac security for christenings: it has placed a defibrillator right next to the font. You can now be confident that the godparents will survive the event. Cases of human spontaneous combustion (less common) can be tackled with the adjacent fire extinguisher.
The HART team from Henfield are coming to St. Andrew’s on Sunday 4th February at 12:30pm, immediately after Graham Jeffery’s 11:00am service. They will demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of the new defibrillator. Everyone is welcome: turn up at 11:00am for the service, or 12:15pm onwards for the tutorial session.
Sloe Gin and Homemade Liqueur Competition: Monday 5th February, Royal Oak Poynings (Village Night — table reservations advisable). Entries in by 8:00pm (a jam jar will do), £1.50 per entry (2017/2018 fruit only). Two categories:
(i) Poynings — Sloe Gin Cup and prize for best liqueur (fruit+spirit);
(ii) Foreigners — Fulking, Newtimber, Pyecombe, and Woodmancote.
Sheila Marshall notes that “you don’t have to have made sloe gin or other liqueurs to enjoy the night complete with Royal Oak Village Night main courses at £7.00 (booking advisable)”.
