Collecting verge litter

Sunday 30 March, meet at 10:30am

Please get involved in keeping the village tidy and free of rubbish.

There are four meeting points:

  • Party 1 starts at the corner of Clappers/Holmbush lanes and moves South;
  • Party 2 starts at the corner of The Street/Clappers Lane and moves North;
  • Party 3 meets at the Ram House by the Shepherd and Dog and moves up The Street;
  • Party 4 meets at The Deans in Poynings Road and moves towards The Street.

Take care of traffic, wear bright colours and please bring suitable gloves and bin liners to collect the rubbish. Dispose of collected rubbish in your wheelie bins. If this time is not convenient choose your own time and do your bit. Perhaps ending up at the Shepherd & Dog for a well earned pint!

Any queries give me a call on 271.

Fulking Social Committee: a plea for help

Fulking Fair in 2013
The Social Committee’s income is principally derived from the annual fair proceeds and is used to finance village needs, including funding Pigeon Post. The provision of such funds facilitates the receiving of grants and reduces the amount required by the village precept, which forms part of the Council Tax.

This year’s Fulking Fair will be held in Downside Meadow on Sunday 27 July 2014 from noon till 5pm. On Friday 25 July there will be a Call my Bluff for 96 people in the marquee, 7:00 pm for 7:30pm, with superior wines supplied by Quaff. Tickets £15 a head (includes 8 wines and nibbles).

Those of you who have attended the fair in previous years will appreciate that it takes a lot of volunteers to organise and run it. We are desperately in need of such help from villagers to man events and to provide relief for those already involved. If you would like to get involved please give Bob a ring on 271.

We welcome ideas on how future monies can be spent in the village. The principal items spent over the last few years are listed below.

Christmas Party report

Fulking Village Christmas Party
The annual village Christmas party was held in the greatly improved village hall on Friday 20 December. The evening was very well attended and many thanks to the principal organisers Jennie Wild and Carolyn Loveless, as well as all the other villagers who assisted. The mulled wine was excellent. A very successful tombola, which was enhanced by a magnificent hamper, donated by Jeremy’s the greengrocer in Henfield, raised £233 which well covered the existing shortfall in the amount required for the new fencing in the North Town Field.

Hugh Rapley at Hut Farm

Hut Farm, Fulking c1980, aerial photo by Joe Lancaster

An aerial photo of Hut Farm by Joe Lancaster, taken around 1980. The farm buildings are bottom left, Pippins and Poynings Road are top right.

Hugh Rapley used to live in Clappers Lane and he and his family left many many imprints on Fulking which still echo in the village. Hugh and his brother ran the market garden and dairy from Hut Farm (see photo above). The cows fed in the field which is now the smooth green cricket club pitch (Preston Nomads). Their milk was still being delivered around the village in the mid 1980s. And Hut Farm? Now transformed into Cannonberries, a single storey dwelling precisely on the site of the old farm buildings with extensive and elegant gardens where the long strips of the fuit and veg had grown for years.

Hugh had an interest in clocks especially old clocks. He could mend neighbours’ clocks and he restored beautiful old clocks and sold many of them in the village shop. People were often very surprised having come in for an ice cream to then see these working antique clocks at very modest prices alongside collectible old books, local pottery and paintings, local bread, baked beans, butter and a post office.

Before the war Hugh’s cow field had been the village field, I was told. And our current village field (North Town Field)? That was probably a cow field. And Barn Cottage, in the north west corner of old Hut Farm? Exactly what it says: a bungalow built ‘inside’ a barn when planners said ‘no’ to proposed demolition.

Fulking Parish Council – Budget 2013-2014
